Non-Financial Restorative Measures

Decoration

Launched in December 2023, Defence is delivering non-financial restorative measures to recognise and support veterans affected by the Ban.

The 14 non-financial restorative measures are split into 2 sections.

Ten restorative measures have resulted from the LGBT Veterans Independent Review. Four are pre-existing restorative measures that had already been available prior to the review.

For the new restorative measures there is a set for that allows those who were directly impacted by the Ban to apply. This includes veterans and serving personnel who served between 1967 and 2000 and for those who are a person of sufficient interest to a deceased veteran who served during those years.

The processing times for applications will vary depending on the measures you are applying for but all applicants should be contacted by Defence within 6 months of application.

For the pre-existing restorative measures there are separate processes for:

  • Armed Forces veterans badge
  • Disregards and pardons for those convicted of same-sex sexual offences
  • Military awards
  • Armed Forces Pensions
  • HM Armed Forces Veteran Card

Other restorative measures include that NHS and partner services should ensure LGBTQ+ inclusive care for veterans impacted by the Ban. Recommendations include mandatory training, expanded accreditation schemes, tailored mental health and addiction support, equal standards for commissioned providers, and improved MoD outreach. Special focus is urged on female veterans’ unique needs and access barriers.
